Positive Reinforcement Dog Training in Southern California
Training That Builds Better Behavior - and a Better Relationship
California Dog Training provides personalized positive-reinforcement dog training for dogs and puppies throughout Southern California. With more than 30 years of professional experience, Robert Eimer uses rewards, clear communication and consistent practice to build practical skills, confidence and more reliable behavior.
What Positive Reinforcement Dog Training Means
Positive reinforcement teaches dogs which behaviors lead to rewarding outcomes. Rather than relying on pain, intimidation or fear of making a mistake, we motivate dogs to participate, make better choices and understand what is expected of them.
Positive reinforcement does not mean training without structure or boundaries. Dogs still need clear expectations, consistency and repeated practice. Robert adjusts the rewards, pace and level of difficulty according to each dog’s temperament, learning history and individual motivation.
What matters is that your dog’s training works for you at home, not just for Robert while your dog is here. We teach a clear system that you and your dog can continue using together.
Practical Dog Training Skills We Teach
Training is personalized around your dog and your family’s priorities. Depending on the program, age and individual dog, training may include:
Reliable Responses
Sit, down, stay, an extended down-stay and responding when called.
Loose-Leash Walking
Calmer walking with less pulling, lunging and competition for control of the leash.
Calm Household Manners
Waiting at doors, greeting people more appropriately and settling while family activity continues nearby.
Confidence and Self-Control
Practice making calmer choices around distractions, excitement and unfamiliar situations.
Puppy Foundations
Age-appropriate crate routines, potty habits, handling, socialization and foundational cues.
Clear Communication
Verbal cues, hand signals and consistent expectations that owners can continue using at home.
The same behavior can have different causes in different dogs. Robert considers your dog’s temperament, history, triggers and current behavior before determining whether the concern is something we can appropriately address in our training environment. Some behavior cases may not be suitable for our program.
Training Throughout the Day
Dogs do not learn only during scheduled training sessions. During Board and Train, Robert incorporates training into walks, meals, play, rest periods, transitions and other parts of the dog’s daily routine. This creates repeated opportunities to practice better choices in situations that feel more like real life.
Our private five-acre Temescal Valley property provides room for exercise, supervised play and training around different environments and distractions. We can also practice inside our home, where dogs work on settling, household manners and remaining responsive while normal family activity continues around them.
Shorter teaching sessions introduce and develop new skills, while practice throughout the day helps those skills become more familiar and reliable.
Behaviors Dog Training May Help Address
Training gives dogs more appropriate ways to respond in situations where unwanted behavior has become frustrating, disruptive or difficult to manage. Depending on your dog’s age, individual needs and training program, training may include:
- Leash pulling and lunging
- Jumping and overexcited greetings
- Excessive barking
- Bolting through doors or running away
- Chewing and destructive behavior
- Poor impulse control
- Difficulty settling
- Unreliable recall
- Fearfulness and reactivity
- Growling or snapping
- Separation-related behavior concerns
Why We Don’t Use Shock Collars or E-Collars
California Dog Training does not use shock collars, e-collars or harsh physical corrections. Our goal is to teach dogs what to do, give them opportunities to practice successfully and reinforce the behaviors we want to see repeated.
An aversive tool may interrupt or suppress a behavior in the moment, but stopping an action is not the same as teaching the dog an appropriate alternative or addressing what is contributing to the behavior. Robert uses rewards, management, repetition and carefully increased challenges to develop understanding and cooperation.
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based methods for dog training and behavior modification.
How Your Dog’s Training Transfers Home
A dog responding reliably to the trainer is only part of the process. The training must also be communicated to the people who will continue using it at home.
At pickup, you will participate in an in-depth Go-Home Session with Robert. He will demonstrate what your dog has learned, teach you how to use the same cues and techniques, and help you begin applying the training to your own relationship and household routines.
Three- and four-week programs include two complimentary private follow-up lessons after the Go-Home Session. Programs of five weeks or longer include unlimited complimentary private follow-up lessons for one year. Eligible program graduates may also receive refresher training during future boarding stays.
Find the Right Training Program for Your Dog
